AVG Anti-Virus works fine (no infected files) BUT virus messages keep popping up. Is this real or advertisment?

Why does this window security alert – called “AV center” keeps popping up showing me a list of detected spyware and adware!? How do I get rid of it? how do I know if this is real or just some kind of annoying antivirus advertisement? again, running AVG results in no detected infected files. THANKS.
